What are Billbugs?
Billbugs are small, dark beetles with a distinctive snout. Adult billbugs are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. They deposit their eggs inside the stems of individual grass plants. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on the grass stem from the inside. Eventually, as they become too big, they emerge from the mined-out grass stems and move into the soil, where they then feed on the roots of the grass plants.
What is the lifecycle of billbugs?
Billbugs have one generation per year in Illinois. The adults overwinter in protected areas and become active in the spring. They start laying eggs in the stems of grass plants as the temperatures warm up. The larvae feed throughout the summer, with damage typically apparent from midsummer to early fall.
What do billbugs do to lawns?
Billbug larvae feed on the interior of grass stems and the roots, causing the grass to wilt, turn yellow, and eventually die.
